Privacy Complaints

How is the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) doing in monitoring federal medical information privacy regulations? As of December 2003, the OCR had received over 2,800 complaints, an average of over 100 per week since the regulations went into effect on April 14, 2003. Many of the privacy complaints have been logged against private practices, general hospitals and pharmacies. Complaints have included impermissible uses of protected health information, inadequate safeguards and denial of access to patients of their own health care records.
